first and foremost i would look at what i have to spend, what my budget is gonna be and what im gonna need to put on the kayak like rod holders anchor trollys and so forth. Any person who is looking to get into kayaking i STRONGLY suggest going to as many places you can and DEMO the kayak that your intrested in and then demo others before buying one set kayak. all kayaks are not the same and no single kayak will do EVERY thing you want it to do all kayaks are design for pretty much different things like creeks rivers fast water slow water and lakes and ponds as well as off shore fishing. another thing to take a look at is what is the over all weight girth and length of the kayak your looking to get into what type of fishing are you going to do the most and what is the weight capacity of the said kayak 350 to 500 pounds. any kayak can get you on the water for net to nothing prices but the over all ideal is gonna be how long will it last? all kayaks are made from different materials and made different ways. a kayak is only as stable as the person kayaking as well if you think you can not flip a kayak think again. now for a starter kayak with a great reputaion and one of my favorites i would suggest a redfish 12 to 14 by nativewatercraft they run new froma dealer around 900.00+ for a standard angler addition kayak or you could go cheaper and buy just a plain redfish 12 or 14 without rod holders and anchor trollys i will always refer people to native watercraft kayaks because they are simply and plainly well built and the company stands behind there product if you have the funding to spend more native can accomidate that as well they have some really great kayaks like the slayer propel 10 and 13 as well as the ultimate fx and the mantaray here is a link to native water craft www.nativewatercraft.com/boat_overview.cfm and the closest place to see them that i know of first hand is hook line and paddle in willmington. if a native watercraft is not for you many other companys are and have come out with great kayaks i would suggest another good kayak is the wilderness ride 135 which they had come out with a new one of those but you can find the others older models on line for a reasonable price. old town has come out with a preditor xl which can be 3 different kayaks in one it has a removable console that can be replaced with 3 options i is a flat deck another is a raised console and the 3rd is a motor console with and electric trolling motor, but keep in mind that if you buy something like that then they need to be registered in the state since any craft with power electric or gas has to be registered. like i said it all depends on what you want in a kayak and what your looking for ,do you want a fast kayak or a slow kayak or one in between and where are you going to use it most THIS is the biggest reason i say demo all and any kayak that intrested you before you buy. i hope this helps and if you have any further questions please do not hesitate to ask ill do all i can to help you make the right choice

Native Ultimate Tandem or a Big Tuna. The 17 foot Hobie tandems are cool as long as someone else carries it for me. I am happy with and thankful for what I have now though.
